HOPEWELL RADEBE, BUSINESS DAY, 2011/08/31
Addressing
the Transvaal Agriculture Union of SA (TAU-SA) congress at the CSIR conference
centre, Dr Mulder said it would be a challenge to come to an agreement with the
government on how much land would be appropriate for commercial farmers,
especially since many black farmers were beginning to grow from subsistence
farming to fully fledged commercial farmers. He said SA’s agricultural food
production was currently in the hands
of only 15% of the very large scale commercial farmers who supply 80% South
Africa’s food.
IN SUMMARY | Our
Future Farmers are consistently and systematically excluded from main-stream
agricultural distribution. It is based on this research that in order to ensure
true Local Economic Development, returns have to circulate within the
Community.
The
case for an alternate Distribution Channel, Local
Supermarket and Community Bank
starts becoming very plausible
